Your Monthly Dose of Culture: September
Are you the type to promise yourself, New Year’s-style, that you’ll get out and do more, see more, appreciate more? sanfranculture is here to help. Peruse this list of cultural happenings in San Francisco for the first week of September, see what you find.
Yerba Buena Gardens Festival [http://www.ybgf.org]
This ongoing festival, held at Yerba Buena Gardens, features a vast array of free performances for all ages. Today the main event is a Celebration of Brazilian Percussion, showcasing many different styles of traditional drumming as well as the Afro-Brazilian martial arts dance discipline capoeira, from 1-3 PM. (The Gardens are located on Mission, between 3rd and 4th. You can find the drummers in the Esplanade area.)
People In Plazas concert series [http://www.peopleinplazas.org]
Again, and ongoing festival, with free concerts throughout September. On Wednesday (the 3rd), enjoy the stylings of Gypsy Jazz outfit Le Jazz Hot, hosted by Crocker galleria. Music from noon-1. (Crocker Galleria is located at 50 Post St.)
18th Annual Autumn Moon Festival Street Fair [http://www.moonfestival.org]
Next Saturday and Sunday (the 6th and 7th) mark an important event on the Chinese lunar calendar, celebrated through multiple stages of free live entertainment. The Chinese Merchants’ Association will present both traditional and contemporary Asian entertainers from 11-6 each day, including Chinese opera, martial arts, magicians, and acrobats. An hourly lion dance will make its way down Grant. (The stages can be found along Grant, between Columbus and Union.)
Sausalito Art Festival [http://www.sausalitoartfestival.org]
Today and Monday are the last two days to visit the Sausalito Art Festival (yes I know – not technically in the city), located just North of the Golden Gate on the scenic shoreline. The Festival, held annually, brings together the work of diverse contemporary artists in painting, jewelry, sculpture, woodwork, and much more. The general admission fee of $20 also gets you music and entertainment, and a nice patch of grass on which to stretch out for one of the best naps in the bay area. Festival hours are 9-6 on Sunday and 9-5 on Monday. (Held at Marinship Park in, you guessed it, historic Sausalito.)
9th Annual San Francisco Electronic Music Festival [http://www.sfemf.org]
From Wednesday (the 3rd) through Sunday (the 7th), listeners of the digital music age may enjoy performances by world-renowned Electronic recording artists such as Monique Buzzarté, Edmund Campion, and Clay Chaplin at Project Artaud Theater. Tickets are $17 general admission or $12 for students. (The Theater is located at 450 Florida St.)
